Vanilla Ice made his reputation primarily with his greatest (his only?) hit Ice Ice baby was released in 1990.
Of course, music lovers experienced had immediately noticed at the time that the bass was coming from the room Under pressure, the result of a collaboration between the band Queen and David Bowie in 1981.
Vanilla Ice was not the first nor the last rapper to call at the time of sampling.
The problem? The members of Queen and David Bowie were not mentioned in the credits of the song. Therefore, they would not have received royalties in copyright.
However, as reported by Stereogum, Vanilla Ice said in interviews of the time that the two partitions of the bass were not quite similar.
This excuse did not convince Queen and David Bowie, who were then being led to trial.
To settle disputes, the blond rapper would simply become the owner of the song itself!
At least that is what he said to host Dan Patrick during an interview that aired on Youtube.
He even claims that buying the rights to the songs was less expensive than the trial itself.
However, a spokesperson for the band Queen, in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, was keen to make the grade as follows: “An arrangement has been made so that the royalties from the publication of the song will be shared.”
So, Vanilla Ice is not the sole holder of the rights of authors Under Pressure.
