At Mazda, we work very hard to develop a new rotary engine. It was the rumor for months, and now it is more clear.
While the japanese manufacturer failed to nourish any rumor about the possible design of a new rotary engine, Mitsuo Hitomi, manager in charge of R&D center, has confirmed that Mazda participated currently on the development of this type of engine. This is what he said during an interview in Wheels Magazine.
He stated that the main challenge around this future rotary engines will comply with the laws on emissions. It is still much too early to make a production year. It is still in the stage of speculation. It could even be that this new engine does not see, alas, never-to-day.
Mazda RX-Vision
The rotary engine could also be used in combination with an electric motor in the development of a possible plug-in hybrid.
If the people at Mazda are also attached to the rotary engine, this is definitely not for nothing. 50 years ago, Mazda launched the Cosmo. This coupe absolutely legendary can boast of being one of the first automobiles in production to be powered by a rotary engine. This type of engine has become a real trademark for the brand.
Mazda RX-Vision
The last Mazda to have used the rotary engine is the RX-8, whose production stopped in 2012. In 2015, the launch of a prototype named RX-Vision (pictures) had fueled rumors of a possible return of the rotary at Mazda.
