MONTREAL | fraudsters are now pretending to be the City of Montreal and send text messages in order to extract money from the victims.
The borough of Montreal-North has alerted the Montreal on Facebook by posting a photo of the text messages that some people have received recently.
The messages in question suggest that the City of Montreal would have paid for a ticket and invites the recipient to click on a link. This link leads to a page with the Interac logo and gives the impression that you can win a refund of 128,67$.
The borough of Montréal-Nord encourages the population to do not click on the link, and adds that the City of Montreal will not reimburse any finding of a violation.
This technique of phishing by text message is increasingly being used by fraudsters and used to insert a spy software in the phones in order to obtain the banking information of the victim.
Citizens have commented on the message of the borough of Montréal-Nord, indicating you have received other text messages from the genre, sometimes even full of mistakes, where the fraudster did go to Hydro-Québec, Videotron, Desjardins, or Revenue Canada.
