After Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, a series of “the Truman Show” for Jean-Marc Vallée

As the famous saying goes, never two sets in threes with HBO.

After receiving a plethora of positive reviews for Dallas Buyers Club and a slew of rewards for its actors (including an Oscar for best actor for Matthew McConaughey and supporting actor for Jared Leto) in 2013, Jean-Marc Vallée has made two beautiful long-feature films in 2015 : Wild, which had allowed Reese Witherspoon to be named to the Oscar, for his turn, and Demolition, led by the excellent Jake Gyllenhaal.

But since then, thee filmmaker has decided to pass on the small screen. Then he realized fully and with gusto Big Little Lies by 2017 (one of the best series in 2017), he has adapted this year a new besteller signed Gillian Flynn with the mini-series Sharp Objects, carried out by Amy Adams. Two collaborations with HBO, which will ultimately lead to a third.

According to the information Deadline, the director will take care of the mini-series the Gorilla and the Bird, adapted from the memories of Zack McDermott : the Gorilla and the Bird : A Memoir of Madness and a Mother’s Love. Here is the synopsis the official book :

“Zack McDermott, a public defender in Brooklyn, 26-year-old, woke up one morning convinced that he was being filmed, the Truman Show, in the context of an audition for a pilot series. Every passer-by was an actor, every car would stop as if by magic for him… After a trip maniac around Manhattan, Zack, bipolar, was arrested and admitted to Bellevue hospital. While he fights to regain his mental health after a breakup, psychotic devastating, he turns to the only person who never left him – his mother (The Bird).”

In addition to being the director, Jean-Marc Vallée will also be producer of the series. It will also be produced by Marc Turtletaub, Peter Saraf, and Channing Tatum. According to Deadline, the actor of Jupiter : the fate of the universe and 21 Jump Street could embody Zack in person in the series, after a long pause from Kingsman : The golden Circle. In fact, the actor has only lent his voice Migo in the Yeti & Company in 2018.

No official release date has been announced and the beginning of the production is not yet known either.

Season 2 of Big Little Lies, this time signed by Andrea Arnold, is expected in 2019.
