In short, a small nugget of action like we have not done for a long time. But that ‘s because Chad Stahelski, the director, knows where to draw his inspirations . And he agreed to entrust us with them in an exclusive interview.
You are in a way a master in the art of waterfalls. They are incredible, especially in John Wick 2. Where does your inspiration come from?
Oh my God. I am a great thief. I fly to everybody. I’m a big fan of Asian movies. And I love Jackie Chan, John Woo. I worked with a Chinese team on the Matrix trilogy and for me, the best choreographer on this planet is most definitely Yuen Woo-Ping. I spent ten years of my life working with him and that is where I met Jackie Chan and Jet Lee, with whom I worked so I learned everything I could, them. And at the same time, I like the composition of Sergio Leone. He can use spaces that make someone very heroic and it is absolutely fantastic. And then Steven Spielberg also and how he uses space to change perspective. I think he’s one of the most complex directors. It’s amazing. After that, I spent ten years with the sisters Wachowski, who are the most meticulous directors in terms of details I have encountered in my entire career. Finally, you put all this in the same pot, you mix and you get me.
At the beginning of the film, there is an impressive scene in which John Wick seeks to recover his car. How did you film that?
It was interesting. We needed an opening scene that could catch a new audience. So in case some people had not seen the first John Wick, you had to show who this guy is, why he’s also badass and all that stuff. So we’re not going to talk about it, but we’ll show it. So during the first scene, we see a motorcycle crash and the car that pursues it. And you do not know what is happening, but you understand that this guy is intense, engaged and a little scary. And then, what better person to introduce than Peter Stormare, with whom Keanu Reeves and I had worked on Constantine ? The whole, mixed with scenes where John Wick defeats everyone. In short, the idea was to open the film in a very fun way, with a lot of action,
There are a lot of cars being destroyed by John Wick in this scene. How many have you used in total?
Four Mustang crashes. And many, many taxi cars. They could not stop crashing. At the end of the shoot, we had only one car left. But that’s good, that’s what the stunts are supposed to do.
It appears that a John Wick 3 is being prepared. Can you tell us more?
It will resume where the second part leaves us. [WARNING SPOILERS] John Wick finds himself with a contract on his head, has no more friends, can no longer access the Continental. The third film will follow him throughout the world, trying to flee his many enemies. That’s all I can say for now.
And what about the series that Lionsgate wants to develop?
They are talking about it right now, but it’s really at the very beginning of the creative stage. They are trying to find out what will be the best way to tell the story of the Continental in the world. I have lots of ideas. I would like to see what happens before the first film. I would like to introduce more the reason for the existence of the Continental, and how John was before all that, when he was at the top level in this business. And I’d like to see him meet his wife. Basically, a prequel to the saga.
