The Dark Crystal : the series, Netflix will be as beautiful and magical as the cult film, says the director

The series the Dark Crystal : the Age of Resistance will reuse part of the technical magnificent cult film.

In the (too) long list of films and cult series come out of the boxes for reasons more or less cynical and disturbing, the Dark Crystal is certainly among the most amazing. The film of Jim Henson has beautiful be worship and loved by whole generations, he has not met a great success at its output, and may seem a bit confidential in 2018. Not a safe value, a priori.

Nevertheless, the Dark Crystal will be back in The Dark Crystal : the Age of Resistance, a prequel in the form of a series, which will arrive soon on Netflix. And at the New York Comic-Con, the French director Louis Leterrier (Elusive) wished to say that the techniques used on the series would be very close to those of the cult film, and that the team has not given in to the ease of the synthesis images.

Louis Leterrier said : “I love the CGI, but I don’t use CGI here”. Because in the original film, Jim Henson, there are only puppets, and the incredible charm of the universe is based largely on this choice. Therefore, it’s difficult to imagine a tribute to this masterpiece by spreading the display of computer generated images have become so common.

The director of The Incredible Hulk continues :

“People have asked what new technologies we would bring in the project, and I answer that, in fact, this will be the very old technology : the green funds. We removed the puppeteers where they are physically train to operate the puppets. But Jim had not the possibility to do that at the time of the film. So even if it is a very old technique, it is a step forward compared to film. We are so happy that it’s still the art of the puppet, because if we remove the puppeteers, it’s still them that are moving.”

Memory magic

The Dark Crystal : the Age of Resistance will take place before the events of the Dark Crystal, and turn around a company of Gelfings, which existed long before Jen, the hero of the film. Lisa Hanson, daughter of Jim Henson, explained that the urge to return to this world was related to the curiosity to know more about their culture and civilization. The series will develop, therefore, their world, and show different groups of Gelfings.

And the memorable Skeksès will also return. The team has appealed to several artists who have worked on the cult film, to ensure continuity, and also of a fidelity which should give pleasure to the fans.

The Dark Crystal : the Age of Resistance will follow the adventures of three Gelfings, who try to save their world after having discovered the secrets that hide behind the power of Skeksès. Still no broadcast date for the series scheduled for 2019, and that will be comprised of 10 episodes.
