Metallica at Festival d’été de Québec: “with our friends”

The fever has not dropped a notch. The expected return of Metallica on the plains of Abraham has filled tens of thousands of diehards who waved his fist and screamed at the top of his lungs during an intense marathon metallic over two hours on Friday night.

This was, perhaps, not madness as in 2011 but, once again, it was enough that echoes the first notes of The Ecstasy of Gold, the start signal of another large mass of metal, so that a heavy clamor rises, and that the link between Metallica and Quebec recreates instantly.

Dangerously in shape, the boys started the evening in pigeant in their recent album Hardwired… To Self-Destruct. The part-title and Atlas, Rise!, whose relationship with the Metallica of the 1980’s is undeniable, have been welcomed with open arms.

Already, one could see that the musicians gave to heart joy, especially Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett, who narguaient friendly while keeping perfectly the rhythm.

Then, James hetfield didn took the floor. “Metallica is grateful to be here to celebrate life with live music with our friends from Quebec. Is it that the family Metallica is here ?” The response of the public was no doubt.

The big deal

The intensity was then increased by several degrees when the bells on the giant screens announced a first ride in the classic via For Whom The Bell Tolls, concluded with Lars Ulrich that piochait standing at the side of its funds.

We could see from the outset that the tour Worldwired, it is the big matter in comparison with what we saw during recent visits of the group in Quebec city. Video projections, laser beams, pyrotechnics : Metallica didn’t skimp on fireworks to put on a show. During Now That We’re Dead, four huge drums have appeared, one for each musician, for a segment of a percussive broken brilliantly with the hectic pace that had been established by the group.

Delights nostalgic

But the fun was above all musical. After The Unforgiven, percussion, Metallica has seriously put the machine on by turning once again back to the powerful doubled Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Whiplash.

From there, the nostalgic, there has been no respite. The group dropped bomb after bomb. Bang, Sad But True. Re-bang, One. Master of Puppets? Roar collective happiness.

The infernal Seek and Destroy came up with a lovely attention: the ticket of the first concert in Québec city at the salle Albert-Rousseau on the giant screen.

Recall, the souls of the more sensitive have made use of Nothing Else Matters before the entrenched Enter Sandman to end on a strong note.

“You know what Quebec? Metallica fucking loves you”, shouted Ulrich.

It is reciprocal, Lars. We’ll see you again when?

Prior to the arrival of you know who, the veterans Voivod have tested the sturdiness of the eardrums of the fans and the new sound system of the plains of Abraham. “The metal on a large scale,” screamed Denis “Snake” Bélanger.

Their wall of sound was… deafening. To the point where it lost the subtleties of the compositions of the band from Jonquière, whose reputation on the scene of progressive metal is more to do outside of our borders. In fact, the album Dimension Hatröss, of which two parts were heard on the Plains, just us among the 100 greatest albums of metal of the Rolling Stone. Nothing less.

Otherwise, Voivod took the opportunity to revisit several titles that were published in the 80’s and given a bit of visibility in his recent Post Society.

The guys from Metalord had smiles big, even étampés in the face when they are mounted on stage, at 19h. This is not every day that a group of Quebec is to be found in front of tens of thousands of spectators on the plains of Abraham.

The equivalent of a hockey player from quebec who plays his first game at the Bell Centre.

The four musicians were, therefore, geared to the background and offered a service in the purest tradition of thrash metal. “We came here to kick your ass”, had subtly warned the drummer André-Jacques Belley.

Unpacking the pieces of their album, Speed of Life, Metalord had the right to a warm welcome. Enough that he keeps a precious memory for the rest of their lives.
