Since the first season of True Detective, Cary Fukunaga is a director in sight. It just came back on the difficult collaboration at the heart of the series.
True Detective is one of the last great international success of HBO. At the heart of the reactor, two artists, of whom the rumor was that they were sometimes in severe disagreement. In an interview with GQ, the director has largely accredited the idea, and sent an ass of cosmic hell to showrunner Nic Pizzolatto.
Cary Fukunaga and Matthew McConaughey on the set of True Detective
He wrote all the episodes of the series. If season 1 was well received by the press and the public, it is nevertheless in its fourth episode that the jaws are severely stripped, on the occasion of a plan-sequence belies, where Matthew McConaughey, infiltrated a gang of bikers, was doing a little carnage.
Except that Cary Fukunaga, Nic Pizzolatto did not at all appreciate the idea, requiring him to fight to hold on to the most iconic of the series in the final assembly :
“Nic wanted to cut it in post-production. He didn’t like that I camped on my positions. What I want to say is that there is nothing really inventive in True Detective. This is a detective series more. Might as well do something fun. “
A fantastic first season
A statement much less trivial than it seems, since it enshrines the showrunner as an author ultimately responsible for much in the success of the show.
Another interesting element of the interview, the filmmaker discusses the creation of the Film, the series he has directed for Netflix. And according to him, the giant of SVOD has a new way of looking at negotiations.
“Because Netflix is a company that focuses on data, they know exactly how to behave to their audience. Therefore, they can look at what you’re doing and tell you : “We know, based on our datas that if you do this, we will lose so many viewers…”
Maniac
It is, therefore, a new form of memo, there is no longer a question of saying : “negotiate, and maybe I’ll take it with me”. The algorithm will always be the hand at the end of the debate. The question then becomes, do we want to take a creative decision, at the risk of losing part of the audience ? “
Maniac will she be provided a series devoid of creativity or risk-taking ? Nothing is less sure. The Verdict on 21 September.
