France realizes more transplants. In 2016, 5 891 organs could be transplanted, against 5 746 the previous year. Once again, the goal of 5,700 grafts performed each year is beaten, welcomed by the biomedicine Agency on the occasion of the publication of its annual report.
The diversification of the sources of grafts, for example, allowed this progression. Since 2014, it is possible to recover the organs and tissue in people who died after discontinuation of care. Ten hospitals are allowed to do so. A protocol which permitted the construction of 114 grafts in 2016.
The gift from donors living also continues to develop. Last year, 576 renal grafts over 3 600 have been made thanks to a gift from the living.
“This success is due to the generosity of donors, the mobilisation of daily teams of levy and of the registry and coordination of hospital-trained, with the support of the associations, but also for information campaigns that have helped raise awareness of organ donation,” writes the agency.
All donors are presumed to
These campaigns, television and radio have helped to remember that every French person is an organ donor presumed. They have also introduced new modes of expression of the refusal. Since January 1, 2017, the French do not wish to donate their organs can register directly on the website or entrust a letter to their loved ones. The oral expression of his opposition is still valid, but the relatives must now transcribe to the written about the deceased.
Reinforcing the principle of presumed consent, while leaving the possibility to oppose, the authorities hope that the donation of organs will continue to grow. And the goals are ambitious. The new Plan registry for 2017-2021 fixed to 7 800 the number of transplant organs per year, of which 1 000 renal grafts from living donors. Recall that by 2016, 22 617 patients were still awaiting a transplant.
