Gala : Many biographers had already turned around Véronique Sanson. Itself has much entrusted to you. What is it that you intrigued with it ? Did you have an intuition, and your interviews have they filled ?

Laurent Del Bono : When I met her for the first time, I was impressed by his natural. Véronique Sanson is a woman who has no character. She has a sincere interest in the other, favours the meeting, the sharing. I didn’t know well his life, nor his career, nor his work. I discovered a person in gold, and a great artist. I never ever thought that she accepted to deliver as much, or that it provides me with such trust. In the world of stars, it is almost unique.

Gala : This is a whole character : it has its wonders, but also its ability to shirk as a current of air. What is it that has you most excited in it ? What has been the most complicated to manage ?

Laurent Del Bono : Véronique Sanson is not complicated, exactly ! As soon as it is engaged in a project, that she gave her word, she does not pretend : she goes back, she is engaging, works with enthusiasm, and when something does not please him, she says, but never be hurtful. With it, it should simply not show up stunning. Rather than arriving with a list of questions, I preferred to leave it to spontaneity and to the present moment. In the course of our interviews, and our telephone conversations, I made my honey of confidences which came unexpectedly, significant details of everyday life, of laughter, of sadness, of silences. The book is built up gently, without force anything. And never better than when we seemed to be off topic.

Gala : You explore, and that is the whole point of your biography and his relationship to his father, René Sanson, decisive in his journey as an artist and as a woman. She had never revealed as precise, sincere…

Laurent Del Bono : Contrary to appearances, Véronique Sanson is a woman, very secret, which preserves a lot about his private life. Starting with his family. When we began to know us, I was immediately fascinated by how she resembled her parents, René and Colette, two beings of exception, the two heroes of the Resistance. She continues to have an immense love for his father (who died in 2004, editor’s note). Without him, she would probably never have become a musician. It was crazy for her. Of her character, of her blonde, her beauty. Because of their feelings, a very strong one for the other, they have gone through violent clashes. I recount some of these painful memories. If she had asked me to remove them, I would have done without negotiating. During our interviews, Véronique said to me : ” If I say it people will think that… so that it was the man more nice in the world ! “

Gala : You are telling a story of intense love, in which birth goes hand in hand with non-recognition, admiration with emulation, freedom with severity. But, in reading your book, one has the impression that they are fascinated one and the other. Veronica remembers ” slaps masterful “, as if there was any excellence in the gesture…

Laurent Del Bono : And without doubt, there was one ! Hear us : this is not to justify or admire outbursts. Véronique Sanson does not endorse. She raised her son Christopher gently, without punishment, or violence. She describes his father as a dandy, whom she has always admired the facts and gestures. There is a dose of humour in his remark.

Gala : Michael Shepherd, Stephen Stills, Pierre Palmade… Véronique Sanson has left all men who have crossed her life. Because she was looking for his father ?

Laurent Del Bono : No, I think not. Instead because she was looking for love, without ever despairing of the meet, nor ceased to believe in it.

Gala : She lived as a guy, but she loved like a woman : it is a definition that looks like him, which illuminates his conception of the feminine and the masculine, or it is even more complex than that ?

Laurent Del Bono : This is indeed a formula that looks like him and that makes it so strong and so fascinating.

Gala : You write that it is viscerally seductive, as much by taste of the challenge of the conquest, but she gets bored quickly. It was a risk to run as a biographer. What is it that attaches therefore to the people ?

Laurent Del Bono : I have met most of those who make up his biological family and from the heart – his sister Violet, his son Christopher, his best friend, Kanou, the sister of Michel Berger, Franka, Bernard de Bosson, Bernard Swell, Laurent Calut, etc… Two things have struck me. Their kindness, their integrity, this way almost in love they are talking about it. And, then, the fact that they know it since always. This leads me to say that Véronique Sanson is a person very loyal, and when she loves you.

Gala : It is surrounded in his daily life, on stage. But there is a loneliness. It is something that she has accepted ?

Laurent Del Bono : Yes. It is absolutely not in the show off. She loves to party and have fun, but she also needs her secret garden where to find. This is a great contemplatrice.

Gala : It has told you its treasured memories. She has retained the family’s apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. The piano and the turntable of his father has not moved, the place is sanctuarisé. It is a woman’s nostalgic ?
