galette des rois

Introduced by Valéry Giscard d’estaing since 1975, the tradition of the galette des rois at the Elysée has made the happiness of the presidents of the Fifth Republic. But it has a small peculiarity.

Emmanuel Macron will not escape the tradition of the galette at the Elysée palace. So far, there is no chance to see the President of the Republic to be crowned king for the occasion. Before him, Valéry Giscard d’estaing, François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy, François Hollande, is are all loaned to the game but the former French presidents have not had the joy to find a bean in their cake. That’s why.

In 1975, Valéry Giscard d’estaing introduced the first galette des rois in the presidential palace. Whereas elsewhere it is fun to know who will be the bean, the tasty almond paste prepared for the head of State does not contain the precious sesame. No fève in the galette ? The explanation is simple : the Government wants to adhere to the republican principles born after the French revolution. At the time, the sans-culottes had also put an end to the tradition of pastry and replacing it by the cake of equality. A way today to say that there cannot be a president and a king.

“It is a pancake that has not bean since there are no more king in France. Therefore, there will be no crown and no queen no longer, ” explained the baker parisian Jocelyn Lohezic to our colleagues from France 3. The champion of France, the galette des rois has to prepare a cake presidential measuring 1.20 m in diameter. The absence of bean will not stop the greed to express themselves.
