ringing in the ear
Finished the buzz standing in the ears. A new study funded by the Foundation, Coulter focused on the fight against tinnitus. Based on years of scientific research on the root causes of the disease, the new device will use sounds precisely rhythmic, based on weak electrical impulses that activate the nerve sensitivity. The work is published in Science Translational Medicine.
Both have the objective of reducing the damaged nerve cells to a normal activity. Participants reported that after four weeks of daily use, the volume of the sounds ghosts diminished and their quality of life, normally impacted by tinnitus has improved.
Target the cochlear nucleus
The brain, specifically the dorsal cochlear nucleus, is the root of the tinnitus. When the principal neurons of this region, called cells, spindle-shaped, become hyperactive, and synchronize with each other, the signal phantom is transmitted in other nervous centres, where the perception occurs. The approach involves two-way. The device emits a sound in the ears, punctuated as a function of electric pulses, soft and precise, delivered on the cheek or neck.
“If we can stop these signals, we can stop the tinnitus,” says the author of the study. This is what our approach is trying to do, and we are encouraged by these results parallel the initial in animals and humans. “
