The end is near ! If last week, in episode 6 of American Gods, Shadow and Wednesday were betrayed by an ancient God , episode 7 took a whole different turn. What happened in “A Prayer for Mad Sweeney”? The Melac editor proposes to you to discover the critic of this episode 7. This new chapter opens with a prelude where we find Mr Ibis proposing to help Mr Jaquel to clean a corpse but the latter declines, He has a story to tell, and indeed, that was the case. So we are propelled in 1721 with a new tale of the trip to America. In particular, he looked at a particular character, an Irish woman named Essie MacGowan, Who believed in the elves and other supernatural creatures since his childhood. This Essie is familiar to us since it is interpreted by Emma Browing, better known in the role of Laura. This is not a coincidence even if their link has not been explicitly given! After a rather complex past – She was a contract servant and was sentenced to transportation for a theft she had not committed – she became a professional thief. However, on the day she stopped praying, she was caught and thrown into prison, where she met Mad Sweeney. In this episode, Mr. Ibis refers to the notion of transportation and explains that it could also be a punishment that replaced prison or death. Yes, this episode 7 of American Gods was centered on the past of Mad Sweeney and why he is so attracted to Laura today . We understand better the nature of their relationship and the complex bond that unites them. Mad Sweeney and Essie shared a neighboring cell overnight and exchanged their stories. After the departure of his co-detainee, Essie received a visit from the prison director who offered him better living conditions in exchange for sleeping with her. Obviously, the young woman became pregnant and therefore had another punishment, the transportation until her death. Luckily for her, this sentence was short-lived since a tobacco farmer hired her to become a governess and they fell madly in love. They lived happily, At the death of the farmer, then Essie had many more years before her. On the day of her death, Mad Sweeney returned to her life and explained that it was thanks to her and to people like her that he was now in the United States, in this country where magic is ignored. This woman has marked her life and it is for this reason that he is not insensitive to Laura.
Return to the present where we find Laura, which decomposes itself by sight and always seeks a means of resurrection. She also released Salim to find the man he loves in this episode of American Gods. So she needed a new car and found nothing better than stealing an ice truck to try to slow down the decomposition process. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and wanting to avoid a rabbit on the road, Laura lost control of the vehicle. She and Sweeney had a serious car accident and Shadow’s wife died again … Worse still, it was learned that Sweeney is responsible for his first death, order given by Wednesday! Whaaaat? Why did Shadow’s boss want his wife’s death? Powerless against Laura’s lifeless body, Sweeney decided to use her room to save her. As a thank-you, he simply got a shot on the part of the young woman.
“A Prayer for Mad Sweeney” broke the codes of previous episodes of this first season of American Gods. This last episode did not show Shadow nor Wednesday and their war seems never to happen, which may seem strange on the part of the screenwriters but it has still provided us with many answers. The mystery around the goblin flew away, which was very pleasant. Actually, this episode 7 of American Gods is part of one of the most successful and lyrical of this first season by offering interconnected stories, both funny, difficult and heartbreaking. He also showed us the importance of the ancient gods and why they are so special today. The Season Final looks intense. We have no doubt that, Episode 8 will end in apotheosis! We look forward to seeing it but waiting for the few days that separate us, discover the spoilers of the week! And you, what did you think of this episode?
