Tell me what you fear, I’ll tell you who you are. This adage, the university, Chapman, California, seems to have made his creed. For the past four years, it applies to probe the fears of the most significant in the United States. Significantly, the wave of 2017 shows a climb without preceded by fears related to the environment and to health.

Judge for yourself, with the top 10 fears most frequent across the Atlantic *:

  • The corruption at the top of the State (74 %)
  • The Obamacare and its reform by Trump (55 %)
  • The pollution of lakes, rivers and seas (53 %)
  • The pollution of drinking water (50 %)
  • The prospect of running out of money (50 %)
  • Of high medical bills (48 %)
  • The involvement of the United States in a new war (48 %)
  • The climate change (48 %)
  • The use of weapons by North Korea (48 %)
  • Air pollution (45 %)
  • The major concern of Americans, that of the corruption of the elites, is a constant of the investigation : it has not varied since 2015. But others (in bold above) are for the first time in the top 10.

“Although there are some fears main of the previous years, we note a pronounced shift towards fears related to the environment,” notes the sociologist Christopher Bader of the university Chapman, who spearheaded the project. This rise of ecological concerns is to reconcile, according to the authors, the decision to Trump to disengage the United States of the Paris agreements on climate change.

    Reason to be afraid ?

Another fear propelled to the summit by the presidency, Trump : the evolution of the u.s. healthcare system. The price of health insurance contracts proposed under the Obamare is climbing. After you have failed a little to get rid of the Obamacare by the Congress (following a vote of the Senate occurred after the survey), the White House is working now to dismantle the system from the bottom up, weakening the minimum level of coverage.

In total, the survey of university Chapman examines some of the 80 fears. And if some of them can be laugh – 7 % of Americans have a fear of clowns and 4 % of the ghosts… it’s a safe bet that the fears on the health and the environment are, however, very rational.

    * The responses were collected on a random sample of 1207 Americans recruited by phone between June and July of 2017, who has asked to evaluate a list of 80 fears spread in the domains : economy, environment, health, natural disasters, supernatural, extremism…
