Drugs controversial, statins have lost the confidence of many patients and physicians. It must be said that the scientific literature has thrown discredit on these molecules anti-cholesterol. But a study published in Circulation would allow to disentangle the true from the false, and confirm the benefits of statins in primary prevention.

Led by a team of the lmperial College London (United Kingdom), these studies have compared the effect of statins in the face to a placebo in more than 5 500 men aged 45 to 64 years of age for 20 years. These participants had high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) but had never suffered from cardiovascular disease before being included in the study. Nearly 3 000 volunteers had an LDL in excess of 1.9 g/L. In general, doctors recommend that this rate is lower than 1.6 g/L.

This excess of cholesterol is harmful to your health over the long term. Builds up in the arteries, the LDL weakens the blood vessels and promotes the appearance of a heart attack or a STROKE.

Less of cardiovascular disease

Also, during the first 5 years of treatment, british researchers were studying the effect of drugs on the risk of developing coronary heart disease, or being the victim of a stroke.

Their analysis revealed that patients on statins have a risk of pathology of coronary heart disease reduces by nearly a third and serious cv events by a quarter compared with the control group. Of profits to be persistent even when taking into account the age, consumption of tobacco or the blood glucose of the patients.
