But what are the actual benefits of coffee ? While the science contradicts itself, a new study has just re-launch the debate and throws a stone into the cup. The work, presented at the congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), show that a higher consumption of coffee is associated with a reduced risk of mortality early, all-cause mortality.

The study, conducted at the university of Navarra (Spain), was about 20 000 participants, and suggests that the coffee can be part of a healthy diet in individuals in good health. “Previous studies show that coffee is, on the contrary associated with all-cause mortality, but this has not been investigated in a mediterranean country “, explain the authors.

Risk decreased by 67 %

The objective of this work was to determine the relationship between coffee consumption and the risk of mortality within a population, the average age of a mediterranean country. The participants were aged an average of 37 years. Questionnaires have been sent on their diet. The monitoring was carried out over ten years.

In the course of the study, 337 participants are deceased. According to the researchers, people who consumed at least four cups of coffee per day had a risk decreased from 64 % to die, regardless of the cause of death, compared to those who do not consume at all or almost never. The risk of death was decreased by 22 % every two cups extra of coffee. This risk reduction was especially visible in the elderly over the age of 45.

However, a few nuances should be made to these conclusions. In fact, some studies have shown that people who drank coffee tended to have a healthier diet and a physical activity more regular. The decrease in risk of death could be more related to these two characteristics as the coffee itself.
