Diabetes has been identified by the regional Agency of health (ARS), Bourgogne-Franche-Comté as one of the pathologies should benefit in priority to a preventive approach. It has therefore put in place an operation of screening for type 2 diabetes in 212 pharmacies in the region, from 5 to 17 December last.

By visiting their pharmacy, patients older than 40 years were encouraged to complete a questionnaire to identify their risk factors, hypertension and overweight in particular. Those with these risk were offered a blood glucose test.

376 diabetic likely

These tests have revealed that many diabetics don’t know. On the 2719 people screened, aged on average 61 years of age, 376 had a blood glucose level abnormal, or 14 % : for 234, it was superior to 1.26 g/L, and even 1.39 g/L to 101 of them.

These rates, calculated for clients who had not eaten in two hours, are sufficient to make a diagnosis. The pharmacists were then sent to the persons concerned to their treating physician, so that he can implement the diagnostic procedure and support.

To confirm the diagnosis, the blood glucose will be re-raised by two blood tests, two weeks apart.
