Each year, the violence within couples cause a hundred deaths. In 2016, this figure is rising, according to a report by the interior Ministry unveiled on Friday. According to the report, 157 people died as a result of domestic violence, 9% more than in 2015 (144 victims).

On the 157 deaths, 123 were women. These last therefore remain the main victims of domestic violence. Among them, 109 have died as a result of violence committed in their homes by their husband, their partner or even their example The other 14 were killed by their lover or by a partner of a short duration.

The study further shows that among the 109 women killed in the month 30 of them were victims of violence earlier committed by their husband or their spouse “official”. The department indicates that 37 % of spouses accused were known to the police services or the gendarmerie.

According to the report, a woman décéderait every 3 days under the blows of her partner, while a man dies every 11 days for the same reasons. The causes of these deaths vary by gender. In the authors male of these killings, the separation of the latter appears to be the main cause. Women on the other hand kill their husbands more often the result of a dispute. Among the 28 women who have committed murder, 17 of them were beaten by their partner.

Nine children killed at the same time as their mother

After the profiles have been prepared by the investigators, the men who commit these violent acts are aged between 41 and 50 years old and do not exercise or more professional activity. They kill most often at home, without premeditation, and with a firearm. The same goes for women, except that they are opting more for the weapon. The report also highlights the presence of the children during the passage to the act. Nine of them have succumbed to the blows of their father, at the same time as their mother. Sixteen others have been witnesses of scenes of violence, of which 8 have called the emergency services. “These tragedies register too often in a context of violence, pre-existing that it is necessary to identify. (…) It is also essential to protect the children so that they are not witnesses and do not reproduce later what they have lived”, stated in a joint press release the minister of the Interior, Gérard Collomb, and the secretary of State in charge of Equality between women and men, Marlène Schiappa.
