GLOW: Alison Brie (Community), “You will come for wrestling but you will stay for history”!
Discover our interview with the stars of GLOW, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Kate Nash, the new Netflix series!
In early June we had the pleasure to receive a part of the cast of the new series of Jenji Kohan, GLOW, which is available on Netflix since yesterday . Alison Brie (Community, Mad Men) , Betty Gilpin (Masters of Sex) and singer Kate Nash were asked a few questions about the drama . GLOW is a series whose plot takes place in the 80s and follows very different women while a certain Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) seeks to create the first female wrestling show. If it is Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch who hide behind this creation, we find Jenji Kohan (Orange Is the New Black) as executive producer.
: What excited you most to read the GLOW script?
Alison Brie : I liked the way it was written, with great depth. I felt immediately close to my character, as a woman of course, but also because she encountered problems that I myself experienced as an actress … And of course the element “catch “It was fun and it set up a dimension that did not look like anything I had read before!
Betty Gilpin : Many pilot scripts open up to very stereotyped characters like “the bitch” or “the intello” , characters that you circle from the first episode. With GLOW, you really get to know the characters through the episodes and they are characters that evolve over time, which are not fixed.
Kate Nash : When you read a script and you love it so much that you forget it is a script, it’s also super cool!
Alison Brie : While I was reading the script, I could almost see exactly what it was going to give to the screen. If I can see from reading what it looks like, it’s always a good sign!
Betty Gilpin : It’s a really original world that Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have created!
Melty: Would you say that GLOW is a feminist series?
Alison Brie : Completely! For all the reasons we have already explained, and because every time there are strong women who do things for themselves, who take their hands and who make their voices heard, it is Necessarily feminist. But I think everyone will love the series, I hope we will turn everyone into a feminist without even realizing it (laughs)
Kate Nash : Sexists will become feminists through the series (laughs)
Melty: It must have been a rather fun filming, you have some amusing anecdotes?
Kate Nash : There have been a lot of musical moments …
Alison Brie : … it is true that we have improvised a lot of small moments sung between the takes, and had no connection with the series. Good and then every time someone was panting it was very funny (laughs)
Kate Nash : We were often criticized for making too much noise, we were making big eyes as if we were in school because we were disturbing the technical team a bit because we were always shouting !
Betty Gilpin : We were told “We know you’re excited and you love each other very much, but we’re at work” (laughs)
Alison Brie : There was a very funny night when Betty and I made a good joke to Kate, she thought there was a ghost in her caravan!
Kate Nash : There was a huge crunch and then I saw a roll of toilet paper unrolled where it was written “I KNOW ALL …” , then the girls made me believe they were sleeping, I Was not reassured!
If you had to convince someone to watch GLOW, what would be your ultimate argument?
Alison Brie : You will come for wrestling because it is an exciting and new world but you will stay for history, because the quality of writing is excellent. There are fourteen female characters, very different, so you will necessarily find someone who looks like you!
Kate Nash : The announcement for the cast promised elastane, sequins, sequins, wrestlers and I said “OUIIIIII” ! That’s enough to sell the show, right? What do you think ?
