Recently, a study has shown that the marriage could encourage weight gain. If this news is not very encouraging for those concerned, the work of these british scientists should do more to please them. According to these researchers of the Aston Medical School of Birmingham, who presented the results of their study Monday, August 28, at the Congress of the european Society of cardiology (ESC) in Barcelona, people in a couple say “heart” have better chances of survival than those who are single.

To reach these conclusions, the cardiologists have studied the medical records of more than 920 000 patients with cardiovascular risk factors or who have already been victims of a heart attack. These patients were divided into several categories : single, married, divorced or widowed. By observing their profiles in the heart, the doctors found that the 25 287 patients who are married is having a heart attack, were 14% likely to survive after the accident than patients single.

These chances of survival were determined as a function of the three main risk factors for developing heart disease : blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. According to the study, patients married to the high cholesterol had 16% more chances of survival than those living alone. Same goes for the diabetic patients living in a couple (with a 14% higher chance of survival) or in patients and grooms who have high blood pressure (10%).
