Weight gain, hot flashes, insomnia, the side effects of menopause are many. By ceasing to operate, the ovaries dry up the secretions hormonal imbalance responsible for these side effects. Us researchers are studying a new possibility to treat these symptoms : ovaries artificial. The study, conducted at the institute of Wake Forest, North Carolina, has been published in Nature Communications.

Reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular problems

The researchers have tested the ovaries, artificial, made in the laboratory, on rats. They have used techniques of tissue to create tissue in the ovary through two types of cells found in the ovaries, the granulosa and the theca. The genital organs artificial were then implanted on rodents. In less than a week, they have begun to produce estrogen and progesterone.

For researchers, this system appears to be more effective than the treatment traditionally given to postmenopausal women. On rats, it has been more effective in the protection of the bones, often weakened by the menopause, and in the maintenance of the weight.

Especially, as this system adapts the dose of hormone every woman, the risk of heart problems and cancer would be lower. There are still several unknowns to be determined before moving on to clinical trials on women. What cells take to make the ovaries artificial ? The researchers suggest the removal of ovarian tissue from volunteers.
