La Fouine, Booba, Rohff … Can the papiers of rap still make resistance?
As they all release a new album this year, Can La Fouine, Rohff and Booba still compare with the new rap posters?
At the beginning of 2010, La Fouine, Booba and Rohff regularly squat the podium of rappers who sell the most records in France. True golden age for them, they are then at the top of their careers. In 2017, they all 3 decided to replenish with a new project. Except that in the meantime, the situation has changed: a new generation has emerged, and it’s now Jul, PNL, Nekfeu or Damso (who just got a gold for Report) who took their place. Can they still compete with their young counterparts? Melty looked into the matter.
To begin with, let’s take the case of La Fouine. Very big record seller at the time, New World , his previous album released last year, was a commercial bide. Well decided to show that he was not finished, he returned to the hardcore rap for his mixtape Crime Censored Capitale . Result? In its first week of commercialization, CDCC sold only 2413 copies (without the streaming). While at melty we tried to understand why CDCC of La Fouine also sold badly , his rival Booba did not deprive himself of mocking him and his sales figures on Instagram. In the editorial office, he would be advised not to call a victory too fast: nothing says he will suffer the same fate, just like Rohff …
Bono, Booba and Rohff are not at the same stage as their counterpart La Fouine: B2O undoubtedly signed one of the biggest hits of his career with “DKR” , and Rohff already accumulates several million views on his Clip “Out of Control” . But while PNL reaches the diamond record with In the legend , Booba has gone on to have a platinum record with the excellent Nero Nemesis , and Rohff has only got a small golden record with the not-so-excellent Rohff Game. Okay, he did not defend it because of his conflict with Universal, but anyway … So, do they risk making a flop like La Fouine? Certainly not as much. But they have interest to work seriously their album if they do not want to finish like him …
