Cinema 14 June, 2017

Today comes out on our screens Our patriots, who tells by the prism of the historical figure of the soldier Addi Bâ the beginnings of the resistance during the Second World War.
” Inspired by a true story .” It is on these words that opens Our Patriots , a film by Gabriel Le Bomin that is released today in our cinemas. The real story in question is that of Addi Bâ young Senegalese soldier who committed voluntarily in the French army during World War II, and incarnated here with a real intensity by Marc Zinga ( Qu ‘Allah bless France , Dheepan ). Taken to a prison camp after the defeat of 1940, he managed to escape, leaving behind one of his closest friends. He was then taken by Christine (Alexandra Lamy), a resident of a small Vosges village occupied by the German forces and, incidentally, resistant in the making. But instead of joining the free zone, Addi Bâ chose to stay in France and fight the Nazi enemy in order to defend his country. With Christine, Marie (Louane Emera) and a few others, he created the very first “maquis” of France he took the lead . And if he should of course be suspicious of the Germans, the rejection of his skin color is just as much a threat. By adapting the novelistic autobiography of Tierno Monémembo, Gabriel Le Bomin highlights the unknown history of the Senegalese riflemen and the participation of a man in the foundations of what later became the Resistance . And just for that, Our patriots deserve all our interest. Especially as Marc Zinga once again demonstrates his talent, infusing a fascinating duality into his character, both fighter seasoned by bridging bridges and killing Germans, a cultivated man and gentle and understanding lover. Even if it is sometimes too much focused on the pompous quotes of our classical authors … Addi Bâ is above all a man who acts according to what he considers to be his duty, At a time when being black and former military is a direct ticket to the firing squad. Our patriots also excelled in the historical reproduction of the time, recounting the staggering beginnings of a Resistance which must navigate between collabos informers and terrified waiters. Filmed in natural settings, the film benefits from more than a careful staging that plunges us directly into the throes of this period of occupation.
But – and this is the main fault – Our patriots lack of breath and intensity ! Yet the opening scene, with its horrifying ending even if it is expected, suggests a film as tense as poignant. An impression that will not be confirmed since the plot takes place with a rhythm rather flat and without roughness. This lack of tension prevents us from investing ourselves completely in history and feeling the full threat to the protagonists. And considering the subject, it is rather a shame, especially since the secondary characters are treated with much less interest than that of Addi Bâ and not always served by an interpretation at the top. Some disappear even without explanation to be replaced by others, Not necessarily more dug. In the end, Our Patriots resembles a fairly academic and didactic film, but it has the merit of presenting us a fascinating and superbly interpreted main character and a little-known history of the general public. Will you see the movie?
