It is, in some sense, the ultimate gift. Each year, the organ transplant allows you to 3,600 people escape to the renal failure or the dialysis. Among them, 576 received a kidney from a living donor. A beautiful progression that must still improve, according to the Agency of biomedicine.

The institution has therefore started, from 16 October to 3 November, a campaign of information given to patients and caregivers. The objective : to encourage potential donors to come forward. For this, radio spots and television will be broadcast. Posters are also provided on the Internet.

Few complications

If the Agency of biomedicine shows if active, it is also because the number of recipients on the waiting list far exceeds that of available organs. If 3 600 transplants have been carried out in 2016, more than 17,500 patients were in need. In fact, the kidney is the organ most in demand in France. It is also the only organ that can be fully given by a person in life.

The gap must therefore decrease. However, “the transplant from a living donor is possible, since the risks incurred by the donor in the short-and long-term are low,” says the Agence de la biomédecine. Complications related to the removal remain infrequent. And less than a quarter of the volunteers complained of pain in the scar.

Patients also fare better when the gift is from a person in life. 10 years after the transplant, three-fourths of the grafts are still functional. Not only their life expectancy is growing, but they are more of a kidney function correct.
