Wait for the fire pedestrian to turn green, look right and left before crossing, not having his eyes glued on his phone… These simple rules should be reiterated to all parents, according to a survey OpinionWay for the association’s Attitude Prevention (1).
In fact, nearly 80 % of parents admit to having had a reckless behavior by accompanying their child to school, compared to 74 % in the past year. But are they aware of the risks they are taking ? 90 % of the children have confided in have already identified a risk behaviour in a family member as a pedestrian.
At the head of these dangerous behaviour : the use of the smartphone to make calls, send sms or watch a application. Distracted, they are then more likely to cross outside the pedestrian crossing (52 %) or when the traffic light for pedestrian is still red (37 %).
Children see everything
An attitude of reckless did not escape the children. For the latter, the use of the phone, and, crossing outside of crosswalks are the main risk behaviours of their parents. More than 4 out of 10 what they have already made the note, but less than 3 parents on 10 remember to have been taken over by their toddlers. The truth comes from the mouth of children, it is said, however…
When questioned on their behavior as future parents, the children seem to have a heart to convey the right gestures. All of them have, in effect, responded that they will learn the good gestures to their offspring. In contrast, more than half conceded that their laptop do not leave on the way to school.
And the children, whose parents are not very serious as pedestrians, think that they will be able to reproduce the bad things. Thus, 45 % of children whose parent has already crossed outside of crosswalks think that it will do so in the presence of their child (compared to 32 % for the other).
