Signs that a Family Member Might Have Depression

Health 1 November, 2019

You might start to feel concerned when there’s a family member who starts to act differently. It’s possible that this person is under too much stress or is experiencing fatigue. However, if these are repeatedly exhibited behaviors, it’s possible that your family member already has a severe mental health issue. These are the signs that the person you love might have depression.

Lack of energy

There are days when we don’t feel well or have enough energy to do the things we usually do. You can’t always put on a huge smile at work. You also can’t accept an invitation to hang out and party with friends. However, if the lack of desire to do anything becomes an everyday issue, it’s possible that your loved one has depression.

Intentionally avoiding a conversation

Some people are too shy to hold a conversation with anyone, and it’s normal. Even adults still have second thoughts interacting with other people. However, if someone avoids everyone, including family members, it’s a problem. It means that your loved one is going through a lot and the best way to cope with the problem is to avoid everyone.

Staying in the room for a long time

Some people don’t even want to go out of their room or face anyone. The lack of courage to face the world is an alarming sign. If you have family members who love arguments and suddenly decide to not speak at all, it’s a cause for alarm.

Failure to perform as well as before

People who have depression find no courage to do anything, even things they’re excellent at. Such failure is a result of their lack of desire to find meaning in life. When your loved one stops talking about work or pursuing old hobbies, it’s a sign of depression.

Appetite loss or overeating

Eating problems could also be a cause for an alarm. Some people tend to overeat when depressed while others deprive themselves of food. Either way, it’s a coping mechanism. Failure to eat well means that the person finds no value in life. Therefore, there’s no more concern given to overall health. Sudden weight loss or gain could also imply a problem.

You need to reach out

You can’t diagnose your loved one and conclude that there’s depression. You’re not an expert, and it’s offensive for you to decide that. However, you can always reach out. Spend time talking to your loved one. There are times when a short conversation is missing in the family, and it might change everything.

People with mental health issues tend to deny the problem. They will convince you that they’re okay. If you know that they’re not, you can’t let things continue this way. You can ask for help from experts like Therapy Hinsdale
