Star Wars The Last Jedi: The Evolution of Luke in the Heart of the Movie

Cinema 11 May, 2017

What happened to Luke? Why did he go into exile on Ach-To? And what was his moral and mental journey? Star Wars: The Last Jedi should answer these questions.
Since we left him alongside Leia and Han, celebrating the fall of Palpatine at the end of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi , Luke has changed a lot. When we found him in the last sequence of the Revival of the Force , the Jedi saw his voluntary exile disturbed by Rey, even though he no longer seemed to want to meddle with the fate of the galaxy. But we can not run away indefinitely, and our hero must return to the forefront. However, it should not be expected that he will become the warrior loving justice and full of ideals he has been! In fact, we even get the impression that in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke regrets to have become a Jedi . And Episode VIII should dwell on the moral and mental evolution of the character, on his journey and what prompted him to retreat to the lost planet of Ach-To . If the relationship of the Jedi with Rey should therefore be at the heart of the film, his own doubts will also represent a big part.
The director Rian Johnson confided in the way he approached the character of Luke when it was necessary to think the plot of the film. He explained to Entertainment Weekly: ” The first thing I had to do when I started writing the film was to imagine what was going on in his head, and I had to understand that. It needed to make sense first. “Why did Luke Skywalker go to this island?” That was the starting point and that’s what the film explores . ” And of course, as much as we want to know where Rey and Snoke come from, we are as curious to understand what happened to Luke . But be careful, Rian Johnson wants to reassure us. It is not because the Jedi went into exile on Ach-To and refused to fight the First Order that he became a chicken! The director ends by saying: ” There must be a good reason for him [to do this]. And it has to make sense for us too. ” A Luke full of doubts and questions, okay. A coward, no! We’re talking about Luke, anyway. What is certain is that Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which will have a more disturbing tone than The Reveil of the Force , should reveal to us a whole new facet of this character that was thought until Present by heart. In your opinion, what happened in Luke’s head? The director ends by saying: ” There must be a good reason for him [to do this].
