The Mummy: Annabelle Wallis “Monsters of cinema can also be heroes”

Cinema 16 June, 2017

If Sofia Boutella smashes everything in The Mummy, Annabelle Wallis is not bad either in its kind! And lucky we are, we were able to meet her.
You may have seen it in the horror film Annabelle , the comedy Grimsby – Agent too special or, more recently, in King Arthur with Charlie Hunnam , but it’s really starting today, Annabelle Wallis is going to talk about her. And for good reason, the 32-year-old actress is on the billboard of La Momie , alongside Tom Cruise. She embodies Jenny, a well-tempered English archaeologist who will cross the path of the hero incarnated by Tom Cruise and, incidentally, attract the jealousy of a very uplifted Mummy, embodied by Sofia Boutella. And if the Franco-Algerian actress is the real star of the film, Annabelle Wallis also has something to be proud of. Besides, it is! When we went to Paris to promote the film, we were able to exchange a few words with her and she told us that she had done everything to get this role . Why ? We will let you discover it in our exclusive interview below.

The Mummy movies are starting to date now. What did it mean to you before you made this film?
These are stories that have gone from generation to generation. They are really important in the history of cinema, in terms of cinematographic experience, story-telling and evolution. So when I had the chance to listen to their idea and how they were going to do it, the actors they approached and what they imagined aesthetically, I was so excited to be part of it! I think we are in an era where superheroes take up a lot of space and what I like about movie monsters is that they are somehow heroes in their own way. There is a certain moral conflict when one looks at these films because one feels empathy for them when they are monsters. It’s very confusing!
I heard that you really wanted that role, what exactly was it that attracted you?
When they told me about it the first time, they told me she was an English archaeologist and I thought, “It’s me!” (Laughs) And I knew it was the kind of people To accept the type of women I like to play, who is not locked in stereotypes. I was so excited to play a woman as I see them: competent but vulnerable, complex and trying as much as possible. That’s what Jenny is, and that’s what attracted me to this role: Jenny’s character, open-mindedness and respect for women, be it in my character Or that of Sofia Boutella.
How did you slip into the skin of your character?
I did a lot of research at the Museum of Natural History, we had an Egyptologist on the set and I read a lot of books and tried to blend as much as possible into this world. History to seem to know what I tell in the film!
Universal has just announced its Dark Universe. What’s Jenny’s place in all this?
I think many questions are left unanswered about her. And I think it’s important to keep it that way, to let people guess. But I hope that people will love her and that she will be back. We’ll see ! But otherwise I imagine many things for her! I think it is unstoppable, determined and passionate. She understands these monsters, she is fascinated. She’s ready to live a crazy life. So the possibilities are unlimited for her. And you, what do you imagine for Jenny?
