The tract cancers, aero-digestive upper (ENT cancers) represent more than 360 ??000 deaths worldwide every year. It is thought that these cancers are caused by a variety of factors, including the chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the mouth, throat, and the crossroads of the respiratory and digestive.
The studies examining a link between the inflammatory state of the mucosa and oro-pharyngeal caused by the gastroesophageal reflux disease and the development of cancer in the tract aero-upper digestive have given conflicting results. A new very large study, published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, found a link in the elderly.

An association to confirm

In total, 13 805 patients suffering from cancer of the tract aero-upper digestive and 13 805 persons without cancer were compared. In practice, the reflux acids are associated more often than the random tract cancer, aero-digestive superior, in particular in the elderly.
This association requires further study to determine causation accurate and, possibly, identify a population at risk so that monitoring can be put in place and that a treatment can be initiated earlier. It is difficult to be completely affirmative, because the data on smoking and alcohol consumption, which are the risk factors the better prepared for this type of cancer, have not been taken into account.
In fact, in the database, resulting in the statistics, the diagnostics are based on the codes used for billing purposes, rather than codes to be referred clinic.
