It is funny to see how the trend was reversed in a few years. If one wants to program quality, deep, bold, and who is interested to real human issues, it will tend to turn to tv than to the cinema, too suffocated by the avalanche of super-heroes.

When we heard about for the first time in The Sinner, the first reaction that we had was to think of The Secret de Pascal Laugier. Obviously because it has Jessica Biel in it and because she has the air of having still serious problems. But also because the general atmosphere left leaves a big shadow heavy and sad, depressive and dramatic, which was not displeasing to us. Now that we have seen the first episode, you can say it out loud : it has nothing to see. And it is so much better.

The Sinner laying his universe with intelligence from the first scenes (past the opening necessarily intriguing) : Cora is employed in the family business of her husband they have a child, they live in two, not from his parents-in-law, mother-in-law takes care of the baby during the day and in the evening, they dine all together. The typical image of a perfect life, a life worthy of a tile ad, except that it was a small concern : Cora chokes, is more of a slave to his everyday life than anything else, and file a bad cotton. During an outing near a lake, it is the blowing-lead : Cora grabs a knife and kills a stranger savagely. In charge of the investigation, detective Harry Ambrose feels that there is something more serious in this story and will conduct its investigation to find out.

UNDER THE PAVED SHOULDERS, THE RAGE

American tv has always had this great ability to probe its society and its culture with intransigence to unearth the hidden, the shameful, the macabre and the reveal at the great day, and The Sinner is no exception, as its pilot, we understand that we are not there to laugh. Taking the premise of the classic darkness lurking under the Polish standards of the bienpensance societal, this episode allows us especially to attend to a portrait of a woman who questions us about the role of the mother, and therefore of the woman, in the modern western society. With regard to the security of the couple and of the family nest, what else is there to the ambitions of the person ? Can we yet exist for oneself when one has made the choice to lock in a comfortable and bright ? That remains-t-it of our personal aspirations and our ambitions when every day resembles the previous one, and that one is even deprived of the fruit of our womb ? Is this not the best time so that our demons do not wake up ? It is seen, The Sinner is not exactly an episode of My Family first.

Of course, all this is only a part of the universe put in place, and the shadow areas are still many. The character of Cora seems to be coming from an environment extremely puritanical and rigid, mostly based on the guilt judeo-christian in that it has more grime and his family today seems to have been the loophole needed to survive. It is understandable then that the plot will prove more convoluted than murder, free and emotional and this driver details already a few tracks pretty damn tempting for the rest of his story.

MESMERIZING AND WILD

Technically, The Sinner is very solid, in its atmosphere, its mise en scene, its a few dream sequences, we stay closer to Cora, we enter his head and the empathy sought-after works of thunder. But this would not be possible without a range of actors at the top of their form. Jessica Biel (also the producer) is stunning, not sparing anything to embody Cora. It was rarely seen as bruised, neurotic, depressed, and lost in The Sinner and she proves to us once again that she is a great actress when the project worthwhile. Bill Pullman in the role of detective Ambrose is no slouch either, as it offers us an interpretation in any areas of darkness such as it had more done since a very long time. It’s simple, without going into excess, one sometimes has the impression of finding the actor in the time of Lost Highway.

What else to say about this first episode, except that it is very promising for the rest of the series ? Taking, tense, intriguing and moving, he takes us from the first second to its end credits, and news of a great series. However, he will have to deal with some traps. In fact, after a boot, too flamboyant, the reduced system is possible in the rest of the series but it is said that, as it will only contain 8 episodes, this format is relatively short should prevent it from falling down. In any case, it is everything that we hope for. We suggest you wait no longer to watch The Sinner, a series that promises to be impactful and disturbing as well as hypnotic experience. And it, it doesn’t happen every day. Fingers crossed for the sequel is going so well.
