The dead are stabilizing in France. While recent years had seen the number of deaths to skyrocket, corresponding to the arrival in the advanced years of the baby-boom generation, this year, the curve of mortality has hampered his race. In 2016, 594 000 people died in France, either as much that, by 2015, according to a report from Insee.

The number of deaths had increased sharply in 2015 (+ 34 000 (+ 6 % compared to 2014) and therefore stabilises in 2016 to a level that remains high. In addition, in 2016, approximately 60 % of deaths occurred in health institutions (hospital or clinic), 26 % at home, 13.5% in retirement homes and 1.5 % on the public highway.

A third of deaths on public roads among young people

Places of death are different according to the age, shows the Insee. Deaths on public roads are rare in very young children, then increases with age until around 24 years of age before declining. They are the most frequent between 15 and 24 years of age : one-third of deaths in this age group takes place on the public highway. The past 25 years, this share has steadily decreased. Between 30 and 34 years, 20 % of deaths occur on the public highway. Then, after 40 years, this share is below 10 %.

This distribution is strongly related to the causes of death at these ages. In fact, between 15 and 34 years, half of the deaths are due to ” external causes “. These external causes include accidents, transport-related, domestic accidents and suicides.

The centenarians died at home

The proportion of deaths at home increases with age until around the age of 30. Then, it reached a plateau between 30 and 49 years, where 37 % of the deaths take place at home. Between 50 and 54 years of age, one-third of deaths occur at home. At these ages, causes of death external are still frequent : between 35 and 54 years of age, 18 % of causes of death are external causes, and 38 % are related to tumors.

After 70 years, most of it is old, less it is common for people to die in a health facility. From 90 years, the proportion of deaths at home is almost the same as that of the death in a retirement home. Thus, 36 % of centenarians die at home and as much in a retirement home.

The deaths of children up to 15 years old take place primarily in a health facility. This is especially the case in infants less than one year : 95 % of deaths at this age occur.
